THE ARMENIAN NEW CONSTITUTION: WINDS OF (UN)CHANGE?

On December 6th, Armenian electors were called to cast their ballot in favour or against a radical constitutional reform. According to the official data of the Central Election Commission 63% of the 50.5% of the total voters who actually went to ballot boxes voted in favour of the change. Hence Armenia is turning from a semi-Presidential republic to a parliamentary one, a revolutionary shift strongly pushed by the current President Serj Sargsyan. The referendum and the amendments to the Constitution were firmly contested by different opposition forces, who suggest that the new constitution which is to enter into force in 2016 is nothing but a President’s tool to retain his power after his second and last term expires in 2018.
